Survival Tips for ECTs
Published date: 2020/08
Are you an ECT (Early Career Teacher) beginning to start your teaching career in the new academic year? Maybe you are feeling overwhelmed and aren’t sure where to start? At Aspire People we are here to put your mind at ease!
In the approach to the academic year, you may have spoken to teachers about their first year of teaching, maybe they have had different experiences but it’s important to remember that not everybody will have the same encounters that you will.
How to ‘Keep Calm and Enjoy Teaching’
Become involved in a school community – By communicating with other teaching staff you can build relationships and have others to talk to and receive advice from, whilst you gain experience in your teaching career it’s okay to admit you don’t know something! By talking to others with more knowledge in the school and teaching environment can help to put your mind at ease.
Be prepared – This may be easier said than done however it is important to think about your classroom, how you’ll be organised, ways to engage with the children, also what you will wear. It sounds silly but you may not think about it amongst all your school organisation but it could be a potential added stress, which we want to avoid.
Remember your work-life balance – Teaching can be an endless process, which is why it’s important to remember to look after yourself. Having time to ‘re-charge’ will give yourself and your students the best experience of education.
Reflect on Your Achievements
Sometimes you may get caught up in your teaching life, but it’s important to take a step back and reflect on all you have achieved! Look at all your positives and perhaps ways you may want to change your teaching.
