About the Role:
As an SEN Teaching Assistant, you will be working directly with children who have a variety of complex learning and developmental needs, including autism, sensory processing difficulties, severe learning disabilities (SLD), profound and multiple learning disabilities (PMLD), and non-verbal communication needs. Your role will be integral to supporting the children in their daily learning and development, ensuring they have access to the curriculum, support with personal care, and encouragement to reach their fullest potential.
Key Responsibilities:
* Supporting Children with Autism and Sensory Needs: You will work 1:1 or in small groups to support children with autism and sensory needs, ensuring they are comfortable, engaged, and able to participate in activities. This includes using sensory activities and interventions to help regulate sensory input, providing support during transitions, and creating a calm environment tailored to the child's individual needs.
* Supporting Children with SLD and PMLD: Provide assistance to children with Severe Learning Disabilities (SLD) and Profound and Multiple Learning Disabilities (PMLD) to help them access the learning environment. You will adapt lessons and activities to suit their learning style, using visual supports, sensory tools, and hands-on activities to support their development and understanding.
* Non-Verbal Communication Support: Work with non-verbal children to support their communication needs. Experience with alternative communication methods such as PECS, Makaton, and communication boards is highly desirable. You will help children express their needs, emotions, and desires, providing a voice for those who are unable to communicate verbally.
* Personal Care and Hygiene Support: Provide essential personal care assistance, including help with toileting, dressing, feeding, and supporting mobility. You will ensure the dignity and comfort of the children in your care, responding to their individual needs with patience and respect.
* Supporting Behavioural Needs: Assist in implementing positive behaviour strategies to promote positive interactions, calm behaviour, and emotional regulation. You will use individualized support strategies tailored to each child's needs, helping to manage any challenging behaviours in a positive and proactive way.
* Collaboration with Teachers and Professionals: Work closely with the class teacher, SENCO, therapists, and other staff to implement individual education plans (IEPs), monitor progress, and ensure consistency in support across all areas of the child's school day.
* Safeguarding and Wellbeing: You will be responsible for the safety and well-being of the children in your care, ensuring a safe, supportive, and inclusive environment. Adhere to all safeguarding procedures and policies, responding to any concerns promptly and appropriately.
About You:
To excel in this role, you will need to be a caring, patient, and proactive individual who can work well in a team, as well as independently. Your passion for supporting children with complex needs should be evident, and you will have experience in providing hands-on, personalized care and educational support.
Key Requirements:
* Experience: Proven experience working with children with Autism, Sensory needs, SLD, PMLD, and non-verbal communication in either a mainstream or special education setting. Experience with personal care is essential.
* Qualifications: A Level 2 or 3 Teaching Assistant qualification (or equivalent) is required. Any additional certifications or training in supporting children with autism, sensory processing disorders, SLD, PMLD, and non-verbal communication would be highly beneficial.
* Specialist Knowledge: Knowledge of strategies and interventions for supporting children with autism, sensory difficulties, SLD, PMLD, and non-verbal communication. Experience using communication systems like PECS, Makaton, or AAC devices is an advantage.
* Personal Care Skills: Ability and experience in assisting with personal care tasks, including toileting, feeding, and dressing. Sensitivity and respect for the children's privacy and dignity are paramount.
* Behavioural Support Skills: Ability to assist in managing challenging behaviour and using positive behaviour strategies, including de-escalation techniques.
* Communication Skills: Excellent communication skills, with the ability to communicate effectively with children, colleagues, and parents. Patience and empathy are key, particularly when working with non-verbal children.
* Teamwork: Ability to work collaboratively within a multi-disciplinary team, including teachers, therapists, and support staff. You should be flexible, adaptable, and able to share ideas and feedback to improve the child's learning experience.
* Commitment to Safeguarding: A strong understanding of safeguarding principles and a commitment to ensuring the well-being of every child. All applicants will be subject to enhanced DBS checks.
Desirable Skills and Experience:
* Previous experience supporting children with complex needs in a school setting, particularly within autism-specific or specialist provisions.
* Experience using sensory integration techniques and sensory tools.
* Knowledge of specialist equipment or assistive technology to support communication and learning for children with PMLD.
What We Offer:
* Ongoing Professional Development: Access to continuous training opportunities, including autism-specific CPD and other specialized courses.
* Supportive Work Environment: A friendly, supportive, and inclusive team where your work is highly valued. We foster a collaborative approach to teaching and care to ensure the best outcomes for our children.
* Job Satisfaction: The chance to make a real difference in the lives of children with complex needs, helping them to reach their potential in a nurturing, inclusive, and creative environment.
